New Naming Contest Begins!

Okay, get ready and start thinking of names! Our second naming contest is getting ready to start and, this time, there are two babies to name! As you know, our ewe Astrid had two beautiful baby girls this spring. They are both doing great and growing like weeds, but we are tired of simply calling them 'baby'. We thought we'd post this picture here so those of you who haven't met them in person yet can get a good look. The ewe on the left (with horns) is what is called a Moorit witch basically means brown. (On a side note, a common misconception is that only males have horns. This is obviously not true as seen here and of course you know that Oona also has horns. No, horns are simply a genetic trait and both males and females can have them.) This lamb is actually quite outgoing and…

And the Winner is....

Thank you all for your participation in our first naming contest! We had some great suggestions and a lot of fun. We will be doing more of this type of contest in the future for sure! In naming our new ewe it came down to three names, Oona, Valka, and Birna. Each of these names were associated with great meanings and had very appropriate connections to what we are doing here at Bákurholt Bær. The people who suggested each of these names will receive one of our wooden Lucets as well as some wool fiber to start braiding with. And now the moment you've been waiting for.... The winning name and the name of the new ewe is Oona! The name Oona is derived from the Gaelic name 'Úna' which means 'lamb'.
